Engaging Equalities in Collections project
Introduction
A Museums & Galleries Scotland funded project with East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture Trust.
Welcome to the Equalities in Collections project! This initiative is all about listening, learning, and creating connections. Our journey began with open conversations between participants, partners, and our dedicated team.
Together, we've asked crucial questions about our Collections: Who are they really for? Who gets to engage with them? What stories are we missing? How can we better reach out to those individuals and communities who are often overlooked?
At the heart of this project is a commitment to building new relationships and finding innovative ways to collaborate. While many in our community make great use of the Collections, we recognise that there are still voices that deserve to be heard—especially from those in areas facing significant inequality, such as Auchinairn and Hillhead, as well as New Scots who have settled here through resettlement programs. We’re also dedicated to amplifying the voices of young people, who are often absent from these conversations.
Over the course of our project, we’ve welcomed 36 new community members and 7 staff from diverse backgrounds, ranging from schools to grassroots organizations. A core group of 18 community members engaged directly with the Collections in our venues, while an additional 12 young people participated as part of the School's Equalities and Justice Group. In our follow-up meetings, we also connected with 6 more community members, ensuring that everyone has a chance to share their perspectives.
Together, let’s ensure that every story is told and every voice is heard.
